HISTORY

Trade Publishing Co. was founded in 1954 by Don Over, operating out of a small office on Ala Moana Boulevard. Its first magazine, Builders Weekly, provided bidding data to the construction industry. Today, Builders Weekly (renamed several times over the years) lives on as two sister publications: Building Industry magazine, a glossy monthly magazine that reports industry news; and BIDService Weekly, a prime source of bidding information.

In 1971, Carl “Link” Lindquist took over as president of Trade Publishing, and the company soon moved to its current location in beautiful Kalihi Kai. The renovation of the building at 287 Mokauea St. — from the old Honolulu Soda Water Factory into a more aesthetically pleasing sight — earned a nod from the Outdoor Circle.

Today, Carl Hebenstreit, also known as Kini Popo, runs Trade Publishing. He originally joined the company in 1957, when Don Over made him a partner and advertising manager. But he left for a while, famously to pursue a career in television as Hawaii’s first man on air. He later returned to Trade Publishing in 1976 and became president in 1983.

Over the years, Trade Publishing has produced many publications and has expanded into offering print services as well. Current publications serve the construction, design, hospitality and property management industries as well as a textbook for the real estate industry.
